Jeff Birkby has been a recognized authority in the geothermal and hot springs industry for many years. He has advised state and federal government officials, Native American tribes, and dozens of hot springs resort owners during his career. Since 2022 Birkby has served as the Hot Springs Association’s on-call geothermal consultant.

Here are a few recent examples of ways Birkby has assisted our members through our Access to an Expert Program:
• Advised owner on feasibility of generating electricity from geothermal resource at resort.
• Consulted with an owner regarding new proposed chlorination regulations at the state level.
• Discussed allowable radon levels in both indoor and outdoor mineral soaking pools.
• Consulted on alternatives to conventional chlorination for a large outdoor mineral pool.
• Advised potential new owners of a resort on fluoride levels allowed in both soaking pools and in mineral water for consumption.
• Discussed options of constructed wetlands and biological controls of sewage systems that would use geothermal heat at an established resort.
• Recommended legal experts on water law pertaining to a shared geothermal well.
• Offered a variety of other technical assistance and leads to other experts in resort design, geology, and legal issues.
